Veiled Voices is a series of performative photographic portraits that explores the relationship between felt memory and lived experience. In it, I reflect on my Armenian heritage especially the words of my grandmother, who was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. In this work, I consider the personal, intimate story behind displacement, which recent events in the Republic of Artsakh in 2023, have resurfaced within me.
In these deeply private portraits, I seek to embody my grandmother’s pain of separation and to capture the remembered emotions of grief, suffering and loss. These works also serve as testament to the legacy of genocide that cannot be erased and seek to give a voice to those were silenced.
Ultimately, I hope to shine a light, not only on my experienced history as an Armenian, but also on the global refugee crisis as a whole. Ideally, it is a call to action, to never forget, the human toll of displacement.
